![]() ![]() You think all those things aren't waaay more inconvenient? The constant spills, the bloodshed, and, all the damage climate change is already bringing makes me think we all need to find a way not to gas up on anything. The shit that fuels wars and endless damage to the ecosystem and our environment in whole. I'd like to complain about the people complaining about how it's a hassle to fill your tank with fossil fuel. So pray tell, what problem does this law solve today that you are such a vocal proponent of it? That it made it easier to make the state “unwelcome” to “certain people”. I mean they’re pushing us all to self checkout, I’d bet most gas stations would switch to self service in a heartbeat if they were allowed. Given how short staffed everywhere is this seems like a waste of valuable workforce. If you’re from out of state, you can “test out” of that and just do the 15 minute refresher before you start. According to one attendant I asked, if you’re from here in OR you get a 30 minute training video before you start and a periodic 15 minute refresher. In the first year in Oregon with the “trained professional fuel dispensing agents” all of the above had happened, two of them twice. I pumped my own gas for nearly 30 years before coming to this state, with only minimal training on dispensing fuel from my dad when I was like 10 or so… don’t think I ever overfilled my tank, spilled gas on my car or scratched my paint with the nozzle or handle. And before anyone chimes in about how professional trained folks do a better job…. This is pretty well disproven by the other 48 states not having any worse safety records around refueling accidents. Before I moved here I did dig into the history of the law. If I moved somewhere with a law I thought was weird my first thought would be, “I wonder why.” And then I would make an effort to find outįunny you bring that up. Second, the law is not nonsensical if you find out why it is that way. (Dunno why you’re getting downvoted, it’s a perfectly reasonable question, and is asked way nicer than some in this sub would ask it.) If that extended opportunity to look around didn’t bring it up for us, I can very easily see how someone more rushed would be more unlikely to discover that. I know a couple folks that moved out here on basically no prior experience with the state because they got a job out of college that required them to relocate here. So it’s not like that 8 days was our first exposure to OR, or even the PNW… but we were lucky to get that much time, not everyone does. But we were already familiar with it, had been to Oregon 5 or 6 times before, and we were following two other households in our family (my wife’s brother and parents) that moved out here in the year before. That trip, which was all about finding a house, and which for a lot of folks who get relocated by/for work was a lot more of a preview than they get, would not have introduced us to the concept. I think you’re reading a bit much into what I said a couple comments above.
